‘Twas the night before Cupping, when all through the house,
not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The Kenmare Crew were nestled, all snug in their beds,
while visions of Bolivian Nueva Llusta danced in their heads.
If you dream nightly of your morning coffee, as do we, your subconscious has prepped you for a proper cupping. Counter Culture Coffee, a coffee wholesaler, recently opened a coffee/barista training center at 376 Broome Street, NYC. The brightly-lit, cavernous space is welcoming, warm and finished with beautiful reclaimed woods; a sound system plays tasty vinyl.
Every Friday Counter Culture holds a free, open-to-the-public coffee “cupping” at which participants learn how to taste and appreciate the complex flavors that comprise coffee. The cupping takes place in a chill, informal group setting and is quite fun and educational. After the cupping we had a fascinating chat with Meister, the regional high priestess for coffee education; she expertly answered a litany of coffee questions from brewing techniques to the socio/economic origination of the American taste for burnt coffee.
